Hey Tom, regarding your problems/bugs: Currently the remap, gradient, math etc. modules take the Red Channel only of a Texture when mapping to a Scalar Attribute (like the Alpha is). Hey and welcome to the forum!

You need to hold Shift while clicking the Nodes one after another.
In the Content Editor you can see all selected Nodes of the Hierarchy Editor and all nodes connected to them.
