Video Mapping

Post by CyberMIX » 11 Oct 2012, 12:25

Hello, all!
Not long ago we start to research in video mapping field. We use AE for making video and then overlay it on 3d model with Camera Projection in Cinema 4d and then make render in right point of view.
We use Catalyst in the capacity of video server and put video on real objects.
I think this method of video mapping production is not optimal. Another choice – use Ventuz like video server and for overlay objects and videos in real-time and don’t waste time on render operations. But in Ventuz there is no Camera Projection analog and video mapping scene setup is not very easy (like Catalyst or Wathout).
Everyone use Ventuz for video mapping? Please, share experience about it! Why you use Ventuz for video mapping? And what highs and lows in this case? May be you can show us your mapping projects?

Using Ventuz for video mapping is radically different from other solutions. If you are just looking for a way to play back your AE videos/content through Ventuz then stop right now and stick to other solutions. You should use Ventuz as the content creation tool. THEN you are in a whole new area. Because of the real-time capabilities you no longer need a camera projection. You project and adjust your 3D scene directly and not through mapping a video. The actual process is identical. You project what the projector sees. But in this case not a movie clip of a rendering of the correct perspective but the actual 3D model in Ventuz. You cut out the middle part and have more flexibility. Since you no longer need to render out AE clips your production time is cut down considerably. And when you have to work with notoriously complex and demanding clients you are still able to make last minute changes to the content. We use Ventuz to create mapping projects that would otherwise be extremely expensive or could not be realized at all.

I think it's very complicated process! Thank you, Chris!

This one was done with Ventuz and I don't know how we could do that without this tool.
We needed to adjust 5 viewpoints.

Turning around a car is so easy in Ventuz :D

Realy cool! ;) You created and showed project by Ventuz? Can you tell us about technical details of this project (it was one PC? You use matrox for join the screens?). What about effects? You use only Ventuz or AE (videotexture)?

Thx guys !

The content was done in Maya, Nuke... You won't be able to achieve Dunlop Mapping effect in realtime.
Ventuz bring to you a flexible workflow. In this project we simulate the real world and put each content where it as to be changing the camera position.

The projectors are never precisely where they was supposed to be. With Ventuz it doesn't matter because you can change the camera positon to match the projector position.

We used 5 Ventuz servers + 1 to trigger the show with OSC events and select some pattern to adjust the softedges...
We adjusted the warping in front of the car by wifi with the free Ventuz Shaping Tool. We've masked the part of the ground where the car was.

1. The wall (2 SXGA+ outputs with softedge like a normal widescreen)
2. The ground (2 SXGA+ outputs with softedge like a normal widescreen too)
3. Left part of the car (1HD)
4. Front part of the car (1 HD)
5. The tire and its base (1 HD in portrait mode)

The 5 servers was synchronised. We used AMD cards. No matrox.

Feel free to ask any question. Even if there are things I can not say I'm trying to give our opinion.

is there any good source on the web for 3D mapping workflow explanation / best practice?
