An alpha node like the Alpha TextEffect but for a total hierarchy would be much appreciated!
For direction one would need to specify angle rather than Near To Far. That would save us a lot of time and render targets if we need to "wipe" on graphical elements along with text.

hey,
what u CAN do - but wich is just another workaround - place a texturenode with a fitting gradient (set on clamp and pass thru) in front of the hierachy and shift it from one side to another.
This will result in a swipe of the whole hierachy without render target. Of course the effect pretty much depends on your UV´s of the stuff you use below it - but in most cases it should look ok.
Once you set up the right texture and settings just put it into a container and save it to your Overall repository, so you pretty much have "one node" that wipes your hierachy wherever you need it.
