Binding properties across different layers

How To (for example)
binding an exposed mover/nudge in layer1
to an animation-timeline in layer2 (not main-animation) ?
Like Christian, I'm disappointed about new workflow in practice. By starting a new project these days I think I will work with v4.
Possibly I'm too stupid for v5
