any suggestion how to make a picture slideshow with a switch node? or any other clever way without having to hand animate many many alpha nodes to blend?

You dont have to animate all images to make a slideshow. Work in a template apporach instead. Only create one transition between two images and switch the URL of the images instead. This way you can have unlimited picture transitions with only one animation.
