Using Animation State within Slide Manager

Is this correct? The animation state when used inside the slide manager ignores the Animation Rules?

What I wanted to produce was two different animations. When going from Slides 1 through to 4 with the animation State set alternately S1/ S2 / S1 /S2

When going from S1 to S2 play Animation A. When going from S2 to S1, play animation B

All changes to the slide animation always play same path, forwards, and backwards.
