I just found a way to get bounding box values for grouped containers using the arrange node and layout
I attached a little scene seems to work.

In version 3 when externalizing I remember you could right Click on a container and say externalize does V4 have this anymore ?

i sometimes get the same issues when i import model, this is because i have exported the model to large have you tried to scale down to 0.01 and turn on bounding box you should see it.
