Hey,

again, legal issue, not technical. ProRes belongs to Apple and we are not allowed to support it (they will not even license it to us). With Codecs, the unfortunate thing is that technically, it would be easy for us to support them all, but legally it becomes a quagmire of epic proportions. We cannot support DNxHD, ProRes, or such codecs, even though FFMPEG might support it. Unfortunately, this is also one of those areas where legal departments are extremely aggressive - they will and do come after infringements with a vengeance, and actively hunt for them.

I am hoping H.265 might change this somewhat.

So, Ventuz can use FFMPEG under its licensing conditions? Its then up to FFMPEG to support whatever codecs it can?

So with the later release of FFMPEG supporting Alpha channel in Apple ProRes, will Ventuz eventually use the 2.1 release?

Not quite. We can implement FFMPEG as a technology, but the codecs are not licensed by FFMPEG, it just supports them. We have separate legal coverage for a number of codec licenses, but DNxHD and ProRes are not included in that. So even if FFMPEG supports them from a technical point in the future, we will not be able to legally.
