Ventuz 2008
Will Ventuz 2008 be compatible with XP or not?
Will use only Directx 10?
Directx10 needs Vista environment?

Re: Ventuz 2008
Hi,

DirectX10 is only available under Windows Vista. If the next generation of Ventuz will use DirectX10, then we can't run under Windows XP anymore. A decission we didn't make yet!

Ventuz 2008
Hi Ventuz-Dev-Team!

Are there any news regarding Ventuz 2008? Any progress regarding a new major release? What are the decisions about hard- and software requirements (dx10, vista, ...)? What are the milestones and new key features in the 2008 release? Have you been able to solve some of the long existing issues (e.g. video playback, slave synchronization)? Are there any ideas about the release date?

I hope you can answer some of my burning questions and give away some of the secrets :)

Thank you in advance!
Ralph

Re: Ventuz 2008
hi ralph,

you speak out of my soul. i allready made some tests with viste with the 2006 edition and except of the big 50hz and vertical span problem problem i would say vista is great for ventuz. anialiazing looks on my 8800 gtx much better than on xp and the core 2 cpu problem is no problem in vista. and video synchronization..........what can i say: would be amazing!!

this is one of the most important but still missing features in the event business.

Re: Ventuz 2008
Hi guys!

We are currently working on Ventuz 2008!
Ventuz 2008 will NOT support DirectX 10! This would require nearly a complete re-design of the render-core.
Ventuz 2008 will be .Net 2.0/3.0 compatible (.Net 3.0 is .Net 2.0 with some additional Windows Foundation Libraries which we do not use anyway).
It will officially support Windows Vista.
Please do not expect really big, shiny new features for the first releases of Ventuz 2008. The upgrade to Ventuz 2008 will be free of charge btw.
We primary concentrate on the upgrade of all necessary libraries.
There will be changes in the GUI. We will reduce the risc for sunburn by the introduction of an optional dark GUI.
We will definitely revise the Video/DirectShow core of Ventuz and try to fix the known problems. But most probably not in the first release. We will address this issues after a stable Ventuz 2008 release.
We expect a Ventuz 2008 Beta for the end of march.

Best Regards
Karol

Re: Ventuz 2008
Karol, thank you for this information. If I understood you right, Ventuz 2008 will not be a major new release but more a cosmetic update. New key features can't be expected soon and you can't give more precise information about new or improved functionality and what priorities you have set on your roadmap. Some of the features you already promised when releasing Ventuz 2006 are still missing and can't be expected in near future. It's ok to hear that you work with .NET 3.0 now but from a user's perspective this information is not important.

I am a big fan of the Ventuz concept and software and use it in a lot of projects. Part of my business relies on Ventuz projects. I also know that the concept has a potential that goes far beyond the possibilities of the current version. However, I'm starting to get unsure whether you will be able to keep pace with the ongoing development in the real time presentations area. Some obvious features that could give you a clear advantage on the market are missing. For an outside person like me I lack a clear picture of where Ventuz wants to go and which markets and applications you focus on. Is the broadcast market your primary target in the future? What is your target audience? If you e.g. want to have more entry level customers, you need to improve documentation and tutorials.

I hope you can undestand my concerns. Maybe other users have similar thoughts? I would welcome an open discussion about it.

Best regards,
Ralph

Re: Ventuz 2008
hi ralph,

what can i say?? again i just can agree :-) or better :-( .

as you know i also come out of the event business and not broadcast and i am shure that ventuz could sell much more pro licenses if they whould focus more on that busines.  i am also missing many features which are very important and as you already said promised in ventuz 2006.

- better warping (whould be nice to start with a very rough grid and later on add points
- better edge blending (with gamma correction)
- video synchronization
- video speed control (with frame blending)
- time code support
- camera cotrols to make an easy camera flight

these is my most important feature wish list

Re: Ventuz 2008
Ok, here is a more detailed list what's on our roadmap for Ventuz 2008 (roughly sorted by priority):
  • Solving Video/Movie playback issues
  • Timecode LTC/MTC
  • Improvements in scene management for Remoting and Scene Reference nodes
  • Improvements in Remote Shape Tool
  • Interactive GUI nodes to ease the building of interactive (touch-)application
  • Improvements in text formatting and layout
  • Improvements and extensions for the Animation Logic/Editor
  • Linking external DLLs in Scripts
  • Project/Scene cleanup functionality
  • Debugging and performance control tools
  • Online Repository
  • Named Bindings/Variables
This is definitively not a complete list. There will be a lot of bugfixes, minor changes and features. And as I wrote in my previous post, not all of this features/changes will be available immediately in the first release of Ventuz 2008. We will handle this as in Ventuz 2006 and introduce the feature with the periodic updates (certainly as fast as possible).
Please feel free to post further feature requests if you think that they could improve your productivity and creativity.

Re: Ventuz 2008
Hi Karol

The most wanted and missed things from my side are:

Improved video playback. Ability to hard-sync the video framerate to the render framerate (e.g. render both at 50 Hz without glitches). For widescreen applications the video playback over several machines has to be synchronized. Only then we can replace the old-fashioned Watchout system.

Possibility to sync the master clock of several machines. Right now I have to use manual OSC sync for every mover and even then the synchronization is not accurate enough.

Custom shader API for vertex and pixel shaders (as promised since 2006: It was mentioned on the product comparison list and then was dropped suddenly and without notice). Right now Ventuz only offers fixed pipeline functionality which becomes more and more outdated.

Re: Ventuz 2008
continued:

A simple but functional user interface which supports standard editing operations like copy/paste, undo/redo, multiple item selection/deselection and rubberband selection in all editors.

Cheers,

Re: Ventuz 2008
Hi Ralph!

Copy/Paste and multiple (de)selection already works. Do you mean with "simple but functional" the entire Ventuz GUI? If that is the case then I totally disagree. The Ventuz interface is by far the cleanest, most organized and streamlined interface I know. Just take Quest3D, Max, ScreenAV, Maya and 1000 other applications crowded with a multitude of different editors, screens, text fields, and so on. I love the principle of the Ventuz GUI. It is really fast to work with. Of course, you could always tweak it to be faster still. :)

Undo/Redo as far as I know is really tricky. But maybe it would be possible to limit the Undo/Redo to specific editors, e.g. Undo in the Animation Editor is completely independent from the rest. The same goes for the text/scripting editor and the Hierarchy Editor (as it already is). The Content Editor could maybe be seperate as well - or at least in part.

What I would like to have would be the ability to change text size and font for all text in the Text Editor. At higher resolutions it gets really hard to read - especially arabic text.

what do you think about global variable nodes?? means if you use the same name in variable nodes they all have the same value!!
